“More machine now than man” describes the appearance and mindset of the Machine of Vader.  Laden with artificially-enhanced limbs, organs, and neurological improvements, he is the epitome of the cold fusion of science and darkness: a being devoid of remorse, guilt, or even basic emotion. According to the Machine, only the cruel clench of the Grip can being order and refinement to the galaxy, and he will do anything to see that end unfold.

The Machine began losing pieces of his natural being years ago, when he served in the Imperial Navy as a TIE starfighter pilot. As one of the Navy’s best, he tore through enemy squadrons as a vibroknife would through nerf butter, until one fateful sortie wounded him beyond what ordinary galactic science could heal. His jaw and right arm were the first to go, but the damage to his vocal cords prompted a cybernetic replacement as well. His thoroughly haunting, artificial voice soon endowed him the nickname “Machine” from his fellow fighter pilots. As time progressed, his flying behavior grew more callous, with no thought given except to achieve the desired mission outcome. As he lost more limbs and organs, so he lost empathy towards his wingmates, who soon opted not to fly with him voluntarily.

In spite of his abilities, “Machine” became an alienated anomaly within the Navy, assigned solo missions where the guarantee of survival was marginal at best. Leadership grew more and more concerned with both his growing isolation and ambition. Eventually, they decided to “promote” him, conversing with the Circle to welcome a formal challenge to the current seat of the Machine of Vader. They knew it was the challenge he wouldn’t refuse, one they hoped to seal an early fate to their prodigal cybernetic child of the cockpit.

They were wrong. “Machine” ascended to his title-sake, deposing of his predecessor behind the controls of a TIE fighter. Now he commands nearly the entirely of the Grip’s starfighter corps, and to their dismay, are looked upon as that much more disposable.
